Spotlight on Abilities

"I remember the feeling of being a 6-, 7- or 8-year-old boy that most people with disabilities can relate to. All my peers were out playing sports or being active in ways I physically couldn’t, so I spent a lot of time alone on the sidelines. I was frustrated that I didn’t have my own activities that I could do that made me feel like part of a community and most importantly, I’d feel like a kid my age feels. Two events happened that changed everything for me. The first was hearing Nirvana on the radio for the first time and being captivated by the idea that you could grab a guitar on your own and play it loud and play it fast and play it dirty. I was able to find friends through playing guitar and obsessing over music. And then years later I was introduced to artists like Keith Haring, Jackson Pollock, Jean Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, etc. Now I see that with just a paintbrush and some paint I can express myself with designs and bright colors and rapid gesturing or slow, methodical chaos that builds, layer of paint by layer of paint. First and foremost, I do it for myself and to express how I feel because I’ve otherwise had trouble expressing myself but at a certain point, I started seeing people’s interest in my work and slowly but surely have begun to sell my work all over the world and I have once again found my community despite my limitations and hardships."- Matt Trumbull
